Centre for Research in Mathematics and Science Education

The Centre for Research in Mathematics and Science Education comprises researchers across the Faculty of Education with a variety of foci including the role of contemporary theory in conceptualisations of mathematical and scientific objects, the development of learner and professional identities, pedagogic knowledge in initial teacher education, continuing professional development and the nature of children's learning. We are one of the UK's leading centres for international research publications, with many articles in major journals such as Educational Studies in Mathematics and Science Education. Tony Brown has published three books in Springer's prestigious Mathematics Education Library series. Dave Heywood has published a book in the parallel series for science education. Yvette Solomon has four books published by Routledge. In 2011 and 2013 the Centre hosted the Mathematics Education and Contemporary Theory conference, which collected together a large number of international figures in this field. As part of this international network of mathematics education researchers, ESRI members have produced four edited collections, two Special Issues of Educational Studies in Mathematics and an ESRC Seminar Series. Yvette is also Visiting Professor at Oslo and Loughborough universities.
