Historic conference in Russia: ‘All Different, All Equal’

ESRI Senior Research Fellow Dr Helen Colley was invited to take part in a historic conference in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, 21-25 September 2006. The event took place within the framework of the European campaign ‘All Different, All Equal: for Diversity, Human Rights and Participation’. An expert for the Youth Research Partnership of the European Commission (EC) and the Council of Europe, Helen gave a keynote lecture on social cohesion and European youth policies. She has also been commissioned to write the official conference report.

The event was called by the Russian authorities, as a key activity of Russia’s chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, and was organised by a partnership of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, the EC, and the Council of Europe. It was reported widely in all-Russian newspapers and on TV. Around 400 experts and delegates gathered to discuss various issues around the themes of diversity, human rights and participation, and to consider the role that informal education and youth work can play in promoting these themes in practice. The conference recommendations will inform future youth policy in the Russian Federation, the EC and the Council of Europe.
