DPR6: Talking Truth to Power

The 6 th Conference of the Discourse, Power, Resistance Series

25– 27 March 2007
Manchester Metropolitan University , UK

Geoffrey Manton Conference Centre

Keynote speakers:
Stephen Ball – Fazal Rizvi – Jerome Satterthwaite

‘What is truth?’ is a question claimed with equal confidence as the province of theology, philosophy and the natural sciences. It was old before Pontius Pilate asked it two thousand years ago; but his weary scepticism chimes with contemporary thinking that truth is always relative, and normally related to power – so that truth claims should always be treated with suspicion.

Who knows the truth, and how do they find it? Who tells the truth and how do they tell it? In words? In images? In deeds? In silences? Who talks truth to power? Can anyone talk or show truth on behalf of others?

DPR continues to draw on the insights of the creative and performing arts. The 2007 conference will take advantage of the superb exhibition and performance spaces offered by the Geoffrey Manton Building at MMU. We hope that creative and performance artists will help to show the way.
